Atelier Grotto

Jean-Jacques Rousseau triggered many movements in history and to this day still holds place on one side of the spectrum about our thinking on human nature. The Grotto I also contribute to him.  After humans settled they soon made their own fake caves. In every culture, in every era, caves have been places of worship. The cave is imprinted in our nature. It soothes the nerves, it is our first inside since leaving our mother’s womb. If human’s were decent in nature but corrupted by society, as Rousseau thought, we can strenghten our bond with nature. What was needed was a backdrop to feel our natural state again. And this was the rising of the Grotto.

Atelier Grotto is a section of the workspace I share with Martijn Petrus (www.martijnpetrus.com) in Brussels. The intention of this ‘basementcave with garden’ is to play with the oddness of the architecture we use as our workspace with the ambition to invite other artists to play along with us. Atelier Grotto is an everchanging Grotto, an experimental little slice of homeliness in a space clearly not intended for those sentiments.
